Thank you,
Jesse and Lesle
Installation of camera with transformer.
Not picture but installation of fan with heater and light in bathroom.
Having a carport/storage shed(16'X24') I needed to have the power line raised from pole to house(County Code).
They were prompt on the day of work. They noticed somethings that needed to be brought up to code. They explained what needed to be done, the way they were going to do it and the cost.
I noticed the pictures are not in order. SMUD disconnecting the power line, the electrician installing the raiser, SMUD connecting the power line to utility box.
What was to be expected was the wait for SMUD, the county and SMUD. In this kind of work you are on their schedule and not the other way around.
The electricians did their work on a timely basis.
I continue to call them for an electrical work and ethernet connection.
County inspector after passing inspection on footing and forms suggested that I have a ground rebar installed.
I contacted OldTown Electric Inc. who I had previously made arrangements to run a power line along with two cables for security cameras an Ethernet line to the storage shed part of the structure.
They were prompt, professional and courteous.
Outlet & Switch Installations In Roseville
Roseville is not one housing market – it is two. Older neighborhoods near downtown and the Blue Oaks corridor often have 1960s-1980s wiring: 2-prong ungrounded outlets, no GFCI protection in kitchens and bathrooms, and circuits that were not built for modern electrical loads. West Roseville is the opposite – Fiddyment Farm, Whitney Ranch, and Sun City Roseville are newer, but residents there are upgrading outlets to USB charging ports, adding smart switches, and bringing older-spec builder finishes up to how they actually want to live. Two cities in one, and we work in both.
Old Town Electric is licensed and insured in California (Lic. #1099728) and familiar with the Roseville Electric utility inspection process. We pull permits with the City of Roseville Building Department when the job requires one and give you a clear picture of what your project involves before we start.
Signs Your Outlets or Switches Need a Licensed Electrician
Not every outlet problem is obvious. These are the situations Roseville homeowners call us about most – and a few that should not wait.
- 2-prong outlets throughout the home. Ungrounded outlets are a code issue and a safety issue. Common in central Roseville homes built before 1980. Replacements with GFCI protection are the code-compliant fix.
- Outlets or switches that feel warm. Warmth at a cover plate is a sign of a loose connection or overloaded circuit – not something to ignore.
- No GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, garage, or outdoors. California code (NEC 2023) requires GFCI outlets in all these locations. Older Roseville homes commonly fail this standard.
- Outlets that stopped working. A tripped GFCI upstream, a wiring fault, or a failed outlet – we diagnose the actual cause rather than just replacing the visible fixture.
- Switches that buzz, spark, or require multiple flips. Worn switches are a minor nuisance until they are not. A buzzing switch is usually a sign of a failing connection.
- You are remodeling or adding a room. New outlet locations, additional circuits, or updated switch configurations require a permit and a licensed electrician in Roseville.
Outlet & Switch Services – What We Do in Roseville
Every job below is handled by a licensed technician – no subcontractors, no handymen. Visit our Roseville electrical services page if you need other work done on the same visit.
GFCI Outlet Installation and Upgrades
GFCI protection is required by California code in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, outdoor locations, and near any water source. In older central Roseville homes, this protection is often missing entirely. We install GFCI outlets at all required locations, verify the circuit protection is correct, and leave you with documentation for your records. This is one of the most common jobs we do in pre-1990 Roseville homes.
Outlet Addition and New Circuit Installation
Adding an outlet where none exists – for a home office, a garage workbench, a kitchen island – requires running a new circuit from the panel and pulling a permit from the City of Roseville. We handle the permit application, do the work correctly, and coordinate the inspection. Call (916) 307-0990 to talk through what your project needs.
Outlet Replacement and Upgrades (USB, Tamper-Resistant, Smart)
Replacing standard outlets with USB charging outlets, tamper-resistant models (required by code in homes with children), or smart outlet switches is a clean upgrade that does not require opening up walls. Common in West Roseville’s newer planned communities where residents want modern functionality in builder-spec finishes. Fast job, big quality-of-life improvement.
Switch Replacement and Smart Switch Installation
Standard switch replacements are straightforward. Smart switch installation takes more care – neutral wire availability varies by home age and circuit layout, and not every location is immediately compatible with every smart switch product. We assess your wiring before recommending a solution so the install works correctly the first time.
Ungrounded Outlet Correction
Two-prong outlets in an older Roseville home are not just inconvenient – they indicate an ungrounded circuit that does not protect your electronics or meet current code. Depending on the circuit, the fix is either a GFCI retrofit (which provides shock protection without full grounding) or running a new grounded circuit from the panel. We will tell you which applies and why.

Why Roseville Homeowners Use Old Town Electric for This Work
- We know both sides of Roseville. Older central Roseville homes and newer West Roseville builds require different approaches. We do not treat every house the same.
- Licensed and insured in California. CA Lic. #1099728. Outlet and switch work done by unlicensed contractors can void homeowner insurance coverage and create liability if a fire or failure occurs later.
- Code-correct work, not just functional work. We install to current NEC 2023 standards, including GFCI and AFCI requirements. That matters when you sell the home or file an insurance claim.
- Permits handled when required. New circuits and new outlet locations in Roseville require a City of Roseville permit. We pull it, schedule the inspection, and close the job out with documentation.
- We diagnose before we replace. An outlet that stopped working may have a tripped GFCI upstream, a loose connection, or a wiring fault. We find the cause – not just replace the visible part and hope for the best.
Outlet & Switch Questions – Roseville Homeowners Ask
How much does outlet installation cost in Roseville?
Replacing an existing outlet in Roseville typically runs $100-$200 per outlet depending on type (standard, GFCI, USB, tamper-resistant). Adding a new outlet requiring a circuit extension is $250-$500+, and a full new circuit from the panel runs $400-$800+ depending on distance and panel capacity. A permit adds a modest fee from the City of Roseville. Call (916) 307-0990 for a free, no-obligation estimate specific to your home.
Do all Roseville homes need GFCI outlets?
GFCI protection is required by California electrical code (NEC 2023) in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, outdoor locations, crawl spaces, and anywhere within 6 feet of a sink or water source. Many older Roseville homes – particularly those built before 1990 in central Roseville neighborhoods – do not have this protection. Old Town Electric can audit your home’s GFCI coverage and bring it up to current standards.
My home in central Roseville has 2-prong outlets everywhere – what are my options?
Two-prong outlets mean ungrounded circuits – a code deficiency and a shock/fire risk over time. The code-compliant fix without rewiring the whole circuit is installing GFCI outlets, which provide shock protection and can legally be marked “No Equipment Ground.” Full grounding requires running new wire, which is more involved and cost-depends on how many circuits are affected. We assess both options and give you a clear recommendation. This is a common situation in older central Roseville homes built in the 1960s-1970s.
Do I need a permit to replace an outlet in Roseville?
Replacing an existing outlet in the same location with the same type generally does not require a permit in Roseville. Adding a new outlet, running a new circuit, or changing the circuit configuration does require a permit from the City of Roseville Building Department. Old Town Electric pulls all required permits and handles inspection scheduling as part of the job.
Can you install smart switches in my Fiddyment Farm home?
Yes. Smart switch installation depends on whether your existing switch boxes have a neutral wire available – most homes built after 2000 in West Roseville do, but it varies by circuit. We check your wiring before recommending a specific product, so you are not buying switches that will not work with what you have. Call (916) 307-0990 or request a free estimate to get started.
