Licensed Electrician in Elk Grove, CA - Ceiling Fan Installation, Replacement & Wiring | Lic. #1099728
Elk Grove added tens of thousands of homes between 2000 and 2015, and most of that housing stock came with ceiling fan rough-in boxes already in the ceiling. Convenient – except a large share of those boxes were installed for light fixtures, not fans. They are not rated for the dynamic load and wobble a spinning fan produces. That distinction matters more than most homeowners realize, and it is the first thing we check before any fan goes up in a Laguna, Stonelake, or Sheldon Farms home.
- CA Contractor License #1099728 — Verified & Insured
- New Installs, Replacements & New Circuit Runs
- All Work Permitted When Required — No Shortcuts
- Flat-Rate Pricing — No Surprise Add-Ons

Thank you,

Installation of camera with transformer.
Not picture but installation of fan with heater and light in bathroom.
Having a carport/storage shed(16'X24') I needed to have the power line raised from pole to house(County Code).
They were prompt on the day of work. They noticed somethings that needed to be brought up to code. They explained what needed to be done, the way they were going to do it and the cost.
I noticed the pictures are not in order. SMUD disconnecting the power line, the electrician installing the raiser, SMUD connecting the power line to utility box.
What was to be expected was the wait for SMUD, the county and SMUD. In this kind of work you are on their schedule and not the other way around.
The electricians did their work on a timely basis.
I continue to call them for an electrical work and ethernet connection.
County inspector after passing inspection on footing and forms suggested that I have a ground rebar installed.
I contacted OldTown Electric Inc. who I had previously made arrangements to run a power line along with two cables for security cameras an Ethernet line to the storage shed part of the structure.
They were prompt, professional and courteous.

Ceiling Fan Work We Handle in Elk Grove
Whether you have a rough-in box ready to go or a room with no fan wiring at all, here is what we cover. Every job links back to our Elk Grove electrical services page if you need other electrical work done on the same visit.
New Installation – Rough-In Ready
Most Elk Grove homes built after 2000 have pre-wired ceiling locations waiting for a fan. We verify the box is fan-rated (and upgrade it if not), confirm the wiring is correct, and mount the fixture per manufacturer specs. This is the most common call we get in newer Elk Grove subdivisions and typically wraps up in one to two hours per fan.
Ceiling Fan Replacement
Swapping out an outdated, noisy, or broken fan is one of the faster jobs in residential electrical work – when the box and wiring are already in good shape. We disconnect the old fixture, do a quick code check, and get your new fan running correctly the same visit. Ready to upgrade? Call (916) 307-0990 to get on the schedule.
New Wiring Run (No Existing Outlet)
If the room has never had a ceiling fan or light fixture, we run a dedicated circuit from your panel to the new ceiling location. This is a more involved job – it typically requires a permit from the City of Elk Grove, and we handle all that coordination. You get a clean installation with no exposed wiring and no shortcuts.
Outdoor Ceiling Fan Installation
Elk Grove’s covered patios are a big part of why homeowners here call us. Summers regularly hit 100F and above, and a properly installed outdoor fan adds months of usable outdoor time. We install damp-rated and wet-rated fans with weatherproof wiring designed to hold up through Sacramento Valley heat, UV, and winter rain. We also make sure the outdoor box is rated correctly – an often-skipped step that leads to premature fan failure.
Switch, Remote, and Smart Fan Upgrades
Pull chains are inconvenient on high ceilings, and not every fan comes with remote capability built in. We wire dedicated fan-and-light wall switches, install remote receiver kits in existing fans, and can set up smart switch compatibility for homes with smart home systems. A straightforward upgrade that changes how you use the room daily.

How Old Town Electric Approaches Ceiling Fan Work Differently
- Box check before every mount. A fan wobbling loose from a non-rated box is a genuine safety issue. We confirm the existing box rating on every job and swap it out when needed – you hear about it before we do it, not after.
- Licensed and insured, no exceptions. CA Lic. #1099728. Using an unlicensed handyman for electrical work voids homeowner insurance coverage in most cases. A licensed contractor protects your home and your policy.
- Permits handled when required. New wiring runs in Elk Grove require a City of Elk Grove permit and inspection. We pull the permit, coordinate the inspection, and close the job out correctly. You get documentation you can use when you sell the home.
- No day-long windows. We give you a realistic arrival window and stick to it. Simple replacements are usually done start to finish before lunch.
- Straight pricing upfront. We tell you what the job involves and what it costs before we start. No line items that appear on the final invoice that were not discussed.
Elk Grove Areas and Neighborhoods We Serve
We work throughout Elk Grove, including Laguna, Stonelake, Sheldon Farms, Elk Grove Vineyards, Sterling Meadows, and the newer communities off Grant Line Road and Bruceville Road. Old Town Electric also serves Sacramento, Rancho Cordova, and surrounding communities throughout the greater Sacramento area.

Our Recent Projects
Most ceiling fan installations in Elk Grove run $150-$350 per fan when wiring is already in place. Add $50-$100 if the existing box needs to be upgraded to a fan-rated box - common in Elk Grove homes built before 2010. If new wiring is needed from the panel, expect $350-$650+ depending on the run length and whether a permit is required. Call (916) 307-0990 for a free, site-specific estimate.
Replacing an existing fan at the same location generally does not require a permit in Elk Grove. Running new wiring - adding a circuit where none existed - does require a permit from the City of Elk Grove Building Department. Old Town Electric handles all permit applications and inspections as part of the project. No extra coordination required on your end.
You can hang a fan yourself if the box is fan-rated, but that is the catch: many rough-in boxes in Elk Grove's 2000s-era tract homes were installed for light fixtures and are rated for static loads only - not the vibration a fan generates. An incorrectly rated box can fail over time, sometimes catastrophically. We verify the box on every installation and replace it when needed. That step alone is worth having a licensed electrician on the job.
Yes. We work with angled mounting kits and extension downrods to position the fan at the right height - typically 8-9 feet from the floor for best airflow. Vaulted and high ceilings are common in Elk Grove living rooms, great rooms, and master suites, and we bring the right hardware to every job. No extra scheduling required.
