Get the Elk Grove panel sized before you add load

When the breaker is fine and the panel is the problem

A breaker that trips on a shared kitchen and AC circuit is doing what it was built to do. The question is whether the panel has spare spaces, a spare bus rating, and a main that still matches how the house actually runs. If you are adding a 240-volt load and the main is still 100 amps, a new circuit does not fix the bottleneck.

We open the cover, photograph the labels, and run a load calc before anyone orders a 200-amp can. That keeps you from paying for a panel swap when a dedicated circuit and a tightener on a loose lug would have solved it. If the bus is full, the main is undersized, or the can is a recalled brand, we say so on the same visit.

East-side 95624 stock vs newer 95757 tracts

ZIP 95624 and the older core near Franklin still have a lot of 100-amp and crowded 125-amp mains. Those houses pick up dishwashers, extra HVAC, and EV charging one appliance at a time until the panel is the limiting piece. Laguna West and 95758 sit in the middle: some 200-amp services already, some still riding the original main.

Southwest 95757 tracts were often built with more spaces. The call there is usually a heat-pump swap, a Level 2 charger, or a main that looks sized until you add the second 240-volt load. Climate and summer peak matter, but the split that actually changes the job is housing stock plus SMUD, not a generic Sacramento heat paragraph.

What we replace, and what we leave

A typical Elk Grove panel upgrade is a stay-in-place 100-amp or 125-amp main swapped to 200 amps, new breakers labeled to the rooms, and a clean cover that will pass the inspector. We keep feeders that are sound. We replace what fails a visual or a torque check. Subpanels get quoted only when the main still cannot take the new load or the spaces are gone.

Permits and SMUD, not a paper exercise

Inside Elk Grove city limits, panel replacement or upgrade work up to 200 amps typically files through the City of Elk Grove Building Division on eTrakit. If the tax bill says unincorporated Sacramento County, that is a different office. We confirm the address on the call so the permit does not bounce.

SMUD is the utility here, not Roseville Electric. A service-entrance change can mean a disconnect window, a meter-adapter check, and a SMUD inspection after the City sign-off. We schedule that path instead of pretending a panel swap is only a Saturday can change. Retroactive permits show up when a prior owner added a subpanel with no record. We flag that before we cover it with new work.
