Home Level 2 charging across the Sacramento metro
Tripped breakers when the dryer and the car charge at the same time. A garage outlet that runs warm. A 100-amp main from the 1960s with no open slots. That is where most Sacramento EV charger installs start, and it is why we look at the panel before we talk about a charger.
Old Town Electric is a family-owned C-10 shop, CSLB #1099728. We install Level 2 chargers in Sacramento garages, driveways, and detached shops. Call or text (916) 307-0990.
Who shows up and what the first visit covers
A licensed electrician from our crew comes out, not a salesperson. He opens the panel, reads the main breaker and the label, checks spare spaces, and walks the route from the panel to where you park. If you already own a charger, have the box or model number handy.
From that visit you get a written estimate with the circuit size, the wire route, and whether the panel can take the load as is. No price shows up on this page because every garage is different. If you want ballpark numbers first, our Level 2 EV charger installation cost guide covers them.
Tesla Wall Connector, NEMA 14-50, or hardwired
Hardwired is the clean choice when the charger stays on that wall for good. Tesla Wall Connector, Wallbox, ChargePoint, and Emporia units all hardwire to a dedicated 240V circuit sized to the unit rating.
A NEMA 14-50 outlet makes sense for a plug-in charger, a mobile connector, or a garage that also sees an RV. We use a heavy-duty receptacle and a breaker matched to the charger, not the cheapest outlet on the shelf. Either way we set the charger amperage in the app so it matches the circuit.
Load calc and the panel path
An EV is a continuous load. On a maxed 100-amp service, adding one without a load calculation is how you get nuisance trips. We run the calc on every job. If the numbers work, we land the breaker and go. If they do not, the options are a load-management device, a correctly fed subpanel for a detached garage, or a main panel upgrade. We tell you which one and why.
Panel work is covered on our Sacramento-area panel upgrade and repair page.
Permits and SMUD: we handle it
A new 240V EV circuit needs a permit in the City of Sacramento and in unincorporated Sacramento County. We pull it, book the inspection, and meet the inspector. You do not have to call the permit desk.
On SMUD meters we install to Charge@Home program rules and hand you the paperwork SMUD asks for. Rebate amounts change, so we keep them in the Level 2 cost guide instead of here.
What install day looks like
We protect the floor, shut off the panel, run conduit or cable, land the breaker, mount the charger or outlet, and label the panel directory. Then we test the charger with your car if it is home. A short run on an open panel is often a half day. Trenching, finished walls, or a panel upgrade take longer, and the estimate says so up front.

Yes for a new dedicated 240V circuit in the City of Sacramento and in unincorporated Sacramento County. We pull the permit and meet inspection. Your address decides City vs County. Edge cities use their own building department.
SMUD Charge@Home offers residential incentives toward qualifying Level 2 equipment and, when program rules allow, circuit installation. Product lists and amounts change. We confirm your meter is SMUD, install to code, and help you gather the paperwork SMUD asks for. You apply as the customer of record.
Sometimes yes, often no. Continuous EV loads eat spare ampacity fast on older Sacramento 100-amp services. We run a load calculation before we sell a wall connector. If the service is short, the clean path is a panel upgrade or a correctly fed garage subpanel - not a double-tapped breaker.
Open-panel Level 2 work is often a few hours to a half day after the permit is in hand. Finished walls, trenches, subpanels, or a main upgrade add time. We give a schedule on the written estimate.
